Our History

Honouring our past, embracing our future

This year, we celebrate 40 years since Emmanuel College first opened its doors – a milestone that invites us to reflect on the vision and dedication of our founders. Their passion for education and unwavering faith laid the foundations for the thriving community we cherish today.

From our humble beginnings to the vibrant College we have become, our journey has been shaped by shared Christian values, a commitment to excellence, and a deep sense of purpose. As we honour the past, we are thankful for every step of the journey and look forward with anticipation to all that lies ahead.

From Small Beginnings

Emmanuel officially began in 1985 with 66 students, operating without uniforms or formal government approval. Just a week before opening, provisional approval was granted, allowing Emmanuel to start with one Year 8 and two Year 9 classes.

Celebrating Foundation Day

In two short years enrolments more than doubled, swelling to 300 students. There were many who contributed their time, money and prayers with one shared objective – to establish a Christian School which would provide a stable and caring environment and ensure a high standard of academic achievement.

The growth begins

As the school prepared for growth, a permanent six classroom building – known as A Block – was constructed. Whilst under construction, some ‘very temporary’ units were ordered (which became known as the hot boxes). It was evident that it was not the facilities that were drawing enrolments.

Welcoming the younger years

The Junior School commenced with 131 students across Years 1 to 7. Even though it was a typical Queensland summer, there were no bubblers and very little shade due to the absence of trees. Classrooms, a staffroom and toilets were the only facilities.

A moment in time

A time capsule was buried in a secret location with the intention to have it opened at the school’s 20th Anniversary. Uncovered in 2006 the capsule was buried again to be rediscovered when the College reaches 50 years of age.

Emmanuel in the media

Schools from around the nation were invited to produce their own video promoting Vegemite. Our Director of Music, along with a group of students entitled the “Happy Little Vegemites” produced the winning video and went on to win the national award. A cash prize of $75,000 helped provide valuable resources to the Music department.
