What sports do you play?
Emmanuel plays two seasons of interschool sport a year. A season consists of 7 matches against the other schools in the association and usually 3-4 trial matches in preparation for fixtures.
All students are required to trial for interschool team selection.
Those students who do not gain selection in interschool teams are offered a small selection of “value added sports” where they will receive qualified instruction or coaching to gain both skills and fitness.
Winter Sports
Rugby, Netball, Soccer, Hockey, Volleyball, Tennis.
Summer Sports
Cricket, Softball, Touch, Basketball, Water Polo, Tennis.
We also compete in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics.
Who do you compete against?
We play against the other private schools in the APS sports association.
Member schools are AB Paterson College, All Saints Anglican School, Coomera Anglican College, Emmanuel College, Kings Christian College, St Stephens College, Somerset College, Trinity Lutheran College.
When do you compete?
Virtually all interschool fixtures are held within school hours (1 – 3.15pm) on either Thursday, (Junior School ) or Friday’s (Senior School ).
Students who travel away for sport may get back to school late on fixture afternoons.
Senior School cricket finishes at 5.00pm.
Interschool swimming carnivals are generally held in the afternoon and evening.
There are no regular, weekend or night fixtures.
Does my child have to have a different sporting jersey for each sport they play during the year?
The school has a single design, numbered, sporting shirt that can be worn for most sports. (Soccer, Hockey, Volleyball, Softball and Touch).
All Rugby teams from Yr 4-10 have the same jersey design, while the 1sts and 2nds Rugby teams have a different design.
Basketball players need a Basketball singlet, while tennis, junior cricket and netballers wear the standard PE shirt. Senior cricketers wear whites.
School swimming togs are compulsory and Athletics team members must wear the school athletics singlet when competing.
Does the school provide sporting clothing to team members?
No. Students are expected to purchase the appropriate clothing for the teams they represent. These items are all on sale at the college clothing shop on campus.
The school does supply nearly all necessary sporting and protective equipment to play.
Does my child have to participate?
Sport is compulsory for all students.
Exemptions are only granted in exceptional circumstances.
Is sports training compulsory?
A one hour per week, after school training session, is compulsory during the winter and summer sporting seasons, for all teams, from Yr 4-12.
Coaches may organise extra sessions at their discretion.
Voluntary, swimming and running squads operate virtually year round.
Do you cater for elite sports students?
The school has a number of elite athletes – currently over 25 at State/ National level.
The school has excellent facilities, high quality sports analysis equipment and some high quality coaches. We recognise, however, that most of the elite students have their training and coaching needs sourced outside the school environment.
Our aim is to provide a supportive and secure environment, with a reliable communication structure, that allows these athletes to pursue their sport, hassle free.
These students because of their extra commitment to sport can also apply for special academic and extra curricula consideration.
What is your performance record?
Our performance record amongst whom we compete has been on a strong up curve in the past few years. We are competitive and respected amongst our competing peers and as a relatively small high school of around 600 students, our performances generally exceed expectations.
We are also currently one of the top 5 swimming schools in Qld (and possibly Australia), with 3 National Champions, 3 National medallists and a host of State finalists attending the school.

What representative pathways are available to students?
We offer all students access to the Qld Schools representative pathway in around 30 different sports.
This pathway is normally: School team District team South Coast Regional team Qld team National team |

Do you offer sports scholarships?
Emmanuel offers limited financial support to some athletes, who by virtue of their performance incur considerable expense in the pursuit of sporting excellence.
This support can take a variety of forms, depending on individual circumstances, but in the first instance is always based on the personal characteristics of the child. To qualify for any assistance, a student must first have displayed a commitment to the ethos of the school, including high levels of effort in academic and behavioural areas, and demonstrated those character traits that the school considers important. For us, character is always more important than mere success.
This means that the school is most unlikely to make offers to induce outside students to the school, preferring those students we know first. We will never approach students from other schools, especially independent schools directly to offer inducements or attempt to “poach” them from other schools. We do not regard this as ethical behaviour.
If a student already enrolled at our school is offered such an inducement by another school, we ask the parents to approach us with that written offer. If you do so, we will ask you which school you would rather attend. If you would rather attend Emmanuel College but have to consider the merits of an attractive offer, we will try to match the offer, or tell you clearly why we cannot, and what we can do. In all these matters, we value honesty and plain speaking from parents and will guarantee to offer you the same values in return.
Depending on circumstances, students who compete at State or National level may apply to the Principal or Director of Sport for assistance. If granted, assistance will be determined on a case by case basis.
The school does provide broad based limited support, on application, to any student who attends Qld Titles as a member of South Coast Regional teams. This broad based, but lower level support, is a more equitable way of distributing limited resources.
Are their any financial incentives for sporting students?
The school does provide broad based support, on application, to any student who attends Qld Titles as a member of South Coast Regional teams, or National Titles as part of a Queensland team. The school also meets the costs of most individual nomination fees required to enter regional championships. This broad based support is an equitable way of distributing limited resources.
Do you have a sports awards program?
We have a multi level awards scheme culminating in the selection of a sportsman and sportswomen of the year. In the Senior School a special sports awards evening is held to present these awards.

What coaching programs do you have in place?
The school has a number of staff who have specific coaching expertise and who run coaching programs for various teams. These programs are supplemented by the use of a number of outside coaches brought in to meet various needs.
Sports that have specific programs are:
Swimming (Full time coach), Tennis, Athletics/Cross Country, Softball, Soccer, Touch and Weights/Fitness. All these are taken by coaches who have Australian Level 2 coaching qualifications.
Do Prep to Yr 3 students play sport?
While the emphasis is on fun, play participation and movement, our P-3 students do have a sports session each week and a dedicated PE lesson each week. These students also participate with their parents, in 3 “fun” carnivals each year – Swimming, X Country and Athletics. The school also offers a variety of activity clubs after school, for students in this age bracket.
Do students have access to sporting equipment and facilities at lunchbreaks?
Yes. We operate a lunchtime sports equipment borrowing system for all students from Yr 1-12. Students have full access to all external facilities during their breaks, with the pool even opened in season, for lap swimming.
Do you keep records of student’s sporting achievement?
Yes. Each year all Yr 4-12 students at Emmanuel are issued with a certificate that is a permanent record of their sporting involvement and achievement for the year.
