Nestled in the lush, green valley of Numinbah lies Bornhoffen, a leadership development centre, which provided the ideal backdrop for our Year 12 Empowerment Conference held in January.
The purpose of the conference was to assist our Year 12’s in managing the demands of school life, to provide opportunities for them to move outside their comfort zones, to build relationships with each other and the staff and to empower the students to start the year feeling confident and at ease.
Students participated in various sessions, some of which helped identify the values that drive them, understand the different personality types and practical ones which helped prepare them for the year. A highlight it seemed was the ‘creeking’ activity which had students both ascending and descending waterfalls. It’s not for the faint hearted, demands a significant level of courage and I’m happy to report that all students took part.
Each night around a bonfire, students reflected on the day’s events. Contributions were positive and encouraging. I feel that the conference was most successful and achieved what it was meant to do. I’d like to thank the dedicated Year 12 staff who freely gave up their weekend to attend.
