Some opportunities, like the Junior School FRIENDS program are woven into the curriculum whilst others like the Year 8 Compass, the Year 9 Response, the Year 10 Journey and the Year 11 Mentoring programs are voluntary. They are all, if I’m honest, quite remarkable. These programs are an integral part of the education on offer here, and I would encourage you to talk to your children about joining in.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Bronze Camp

Duke of Ed.JPG

Our Year 9 students doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award this year have shown that positive attitude, a willingness to learn and good preparation can make for great adventures. Last term a group climbed from Numbinbah Valley to Binna Burra during the night and then took on the 17km Coomera Circuit the next day for their marathon-like Bronze qualifier.

This past weekend another group got a bus to Toowoomba (courtesy of Mr Jorgensen) and toughed out two nights in zero degree weather at Camp Cooby for their award. The attitude of these outstanding adventurers is captured in this memory from the more recent trip:

The weekend was a heap of fun and even though it was laid back during the day and not too hard, the nights were the big challenge for all … The first night was the hardest challenge because I didn’t think and expect it to be as cold as it was but the second night I was a lot more prepared and ready to take on the night. I had so much fun with everyone and I loved being able to spend time with people who I know well but don’t talk to as much as others, it was really good because we made so many memories together as a big group and we will remember them for the rest of our lives. I really liked the group that we went on this weekend because everyone was friendly and accepting towards each other and were always willing to give a hand, Duke of Ed is one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life!”
