On Wednesday 29 October, Emmanuel College hosted the Gold Coast Chess Individual Age Championship. Over four hundred students from more than twenty Gold Coast schools visited our College for the event, which required all competitors to play seven matches. Students were pitted against other students born in the same year (e.g. 2003 ‘babies’ competed in their own competition), meaning that there were thirteen separate age competitions running simultaneously from 1996 to 2008.
Four Emmanuel College students came away with medallions:
1997 - Ethan Ismay (silver medal)
2001 - Daniel Miller (bronze medal)
2003 - Liam Kelly (silver medal – finished equal 1st, 2nd on countback)
2003 - Jordan Bayldon (bronze medal)
The Emmanuel College hall proved to be an ideal venue for this event, providing plenty of space for students to compete and for the many visiting parents to watch. A big thank you to Andrew Fitzpatrick, from Gardiner Chess, who organised and ran the Championship.
