A very warm welcome to Term 3. We hope all our students and families had a restful and fulfilling break, ready to embrace the second semester of 2020.
After last term was so unusual, filled with uncertainty and variation, staff decided to give our students a little bit of fun to end the term and devised a game of surprise digital Pictionary. Students had to guess what was being shown.
We had some fantastic reactions from students and it was a nice opportunity to spread a little extra joy for the end of term!
There was great excitement throughout the day as students from Prep right up to Senior School got to play interactive Surprise Pictionary! The mobile digital screens came to life as Mrs Vocale drew pictures from behind the scenes and if guessed correctly, students were presented with the item as a gift... from toy guitars to drones, soccer games and even a giant teddy bear!!
Prep Dress-up Day
At the end of last term, we were lucky enough to be allowed to have our annual Prep Nursery Rhyme Dress-up parade. Students came dressed in their favourite nursery rhyme character and paraded around the shed. We missed our parent spectators but hope that you enjoyed the photos shared on the Prep Schoolbox page along with these group shots.
Year 3s Get Active at Runaway Bay
At the start of this week, Year 3 students had an interactive activity day at Runaway Bay. Students were presented with a variety of team-building activities to keep them active, yet challenge their minds!
Maths in Action
Earlier this week, some of our Senior School students had the opportunity to explore real-life Maths scenarios. This is in line with the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) which heralds a significant change for Maths, with the introduction of problem-solving and modelling assessment tasks. Students respond to a specific task or issue that highlights a real-life application of mathematics, ranging from determining the angle of elevation at which you need to kick a football to hit the crossbar, to calculating the cost of replacing all the stained glass windows in the Chapel. Here's some of our budding mathematicians in action....
Start Smart 2020 - Commonwealth Bank Program
Year 10 Accounting, Business and Economics students participated in the Start Smart program facilitated by the Commonwealth Bank. The award-winning program promotes financial literacy in the classroom and encourages students to consider their financial futures. Students participated in sessions on Smart Saving, Smart Enterprise, and Smart Earning. The workshops were conducted online this year and students were able to engage with presenters from all around Australia.
Year 10 Business - Taste Test Activity
At the end of last term, Year 10 Business students participated in a market research experiment on potato chips as part of their study on marketing strategies. Students sampled a range of products and completed a survey to determine the results. The data indicated the favourite was… Smiths!
Student Perspective on COVID-19
As we are currently experiencing our own 'historic moment', Year 7 had the opportunity to create their own museum to demonstrate their experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. All Year 7 students were invited to create or contribute a primary visual source and a primary written source highlighting their perspective. With toilet paper, hand sanitizer, screen-shots, emojis, memes, life-hacks and diary entries. The "museum" was open to staff and students to explore in the final week of Term 2.
A huge thank you to all Year 7 students, our Year 7 class curators and tour guides and Humanities teachers; Mrs Hayes, Mrs Maslen and Mr Speechley.
Emmanuel students embrace Recycling
A group of Senior School students came up with a great initiative to manage the recycling of bottles and cans within Emmanuel.
The idea of the can/bottle deposit bins came about when seeing the number of bottles and cans which the canteen sells and the lack of options for disposing of these cans. Products that can be placed inside the bins are cans and bottles, excluding flavoured milk bottles from the canteen.
These bins are not for generic recycling and focus solely on can and bottles so other plastics such as icy cups and tins do not belong in them. There are six bins located throughout the school campus. There are bins outside reception, the canteen, next to the gazebo in the quad and three are located in the Neville Bonner building (in the year 7, 11 and 12 areas).
When the bins are full, they are collected by Express Recycling which take the bins away to processes the items in the 'containers for change' scheme which gives a 10c refund for each container. The environmental committee invests funds raised into other initiatives.

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed reading all those books that were borrowed towards the end of last term.
EC Read has commenced for Term 3. We have made some exciting changes and created a new look EC Read. All grades also have some new activities included. We hope you have fun getting creative with all your responses. This term the students need to read and report on 8 books. Congratulations to the following students who won a $25 book gift voucher for their outstanding submissions in Semester One.
Year 3: Gracie Blair
Year 4: Amy Hannan
Year 5: Leah Jongbloed
Year 6: Joel Del Villar
There will be more gift vouchers up for grabs at the end of Semester Two.
There has been such a tremendous response to the Premier's Reading Challenge 2020 with over 200 students having signed up for the challenge. The challenge finishes on 28 August, so there is still plenty of time to complete the required number of books. Please make sure that all those books that were read over the holidays are added to the reading log. Don't forget that all Grade 3 to Grade 6 students who are doing EC Read in Term 3 are able to include their EC Read books in their allocation.
The highly anticipated dress up as your Favourite Book Character Day will be taking place this term in Week 6. The Junior School will be on Friday 21 August. This year we are inviting our Senior School students to join in on the fun and dress up as their favourite character on Wednesday 19 August. More details to follow.
Happy Reading!
Coming soon: Battle of the Bands!
Preliminary rounds will take place for students on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in weeks 5 and 6 in Chapel Court.
The finals will take place on Friday 4 September (week 8) on the Village Green at 1.00pm due to there being no sport on this day.
Further information on dates, times and details will be provided soon to students and families.
We will unfortunately only be able to accommodate students and staff on our campus, but the two preliminary rounds and the finals will be live streamed for parents.
We all look forward to this exciting new initiative!
Cross Country: Unprecedented results!
In a day befitting the unusual year we have had, our Junior School and Senior School Cross Country carnivals produced the two closest results ever recorded.
Remarkably, the Senior School result was even closer, with Luther and Taylor recording the first-ever tie in House carnival history. Considering the number of students involved and the spread of points available, the results confirm how closely matched our houses are this year.
Whilst the format was different from previous years, our trained athletes were still able to produce some highly competitive performances and very exciting races. All others had a shorter than usual course to negotiate to earn points for their house.
It was good to see some new names on the podium, shaking up the normal status quo, but also pleasing to see our outright champions still performing well, despite the 3-month layoff. It was also great to be able to live stream all the races for the first time ever. A big thanks to the IT department for this major innovation.
With no District carnival to attend this year, that is the end of the Cross-Country season, but at least many of our students will still be able to say they were proud of their achievements and improvements from previous years.
Congratulations to all runners and in particular to the Age Champions, who showed us all what talent and training can do.

Athletics
It was great to see some semblance of normality return to our Sports Program last week, with our Annual House Athletics carnivals being held in their usual timeslot.
Given the very interrupted preparation this year, it was a big surprise to see over a dozen records set, mainly in the Senior School. It was a real credit to our students that the standard of competition and participation was so high over the 4 days of carnivals.
Just one record was broken, with an outstanding run by Eva Llewellyn in the 9-year girls, smashing 15 seconds off the previous 800m record, with a superb time of 3min 05.30sec
Over the past four years, every Senior School House has had a turn at winning the carnival, which suggests a very even spread of talent. This year it was Taylor’s turn to return to the winning list, leading from start to finish to record a convincing win over Wycliffe.
Of course the Senior Athletics carnival wouldn't be the same without the House Shuttle race and the Tug of War!
As mentioned above, a number of records, across all disciplines were broken, with outstanding efforts by Brock Waugh, Max Durrington and Sierra Llewellyn to each claim 2 records.

Whilst we missed having our loyal parent supporters at both the Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals this year, there was certainly no lack of team spirit and enthusiasm! Thank you to all our staff who assisted on the day.
